SUPERBUTTONKOALAPARTY

We’re co-throwing a big party in Hilversum, Holland next week, as a part of the DiGRA conference!

There will lots of music and games, including a live performance by legendary turntablist/illustrator Kid Koala. Awesome! And we’ll be exhibiting five of our own party games, including a public debut of two new games – Egg Party and Pillow Time.

B.U.T.T.O.N. Summer Sale!

It’s summer! To celebrate, we’ve joined in on the big Steam “Summer Camp” Sale. Our award-winning physical party game B.U.T.T.O.N. is 50% off. Now only 1.50 dollars/euros!

Buy it here.

The sale lasts until July 10, and applies to both the Steam version and also the alternative PC version that we sell off our own website. Remember that our alternative version includes exclusive “adult content”!

Do us a favor and help spread the word!

Also! Our friend Nifflas, who did the music for B.U.T.T.O.N., is also part of the same summer sale. You can grab two of his games, Saira and NightSky, for a very nice discount! We’re big fans of both those games, so make sure to pick them up if you haven’t already played them. Nifflas is also giving away his gorgeous Saira soundtrack for free, here. Wooo!

Where Is My Heart? At E3!

Those of you attending E3 this week should stop by the IndieCade booth! Our very own PSP game Where Is My Heart? will be on display for the public to try. Even better, it will be joined by a number of other rad indie games (we’re particularly excited about Honeyslug’s Hohokum and Richard Boeser’s Ibb & Obb).

In addition, IndieCade asked us to design a special B.U.T.T.O.N.-inspired poster for their E3 showcase. Nils had a lot of fun with the assignment. But who are those other people in the photo with us?! See if you can figure out who they are!

A Social Active Game Experience

Our friend Adam Henriksson at the Umeå Institute of Design is writing/making a thesis project about social interaction in games. He actually flew all the way down to Copenhagen for our Arcade Boat party to shoot some footage.

This week he edited this beautiful two-minute trailer! So inspiring, we’re so honored to be a part of it. Give it a watch:

And congrats to Adam, who apparently just won a “best project” award for the thesis! Well deserved.

Arcade Boat Photos

Earlier this month we threw a crazy party/exhibition on Illutron, an art boat in one of Copenhagen’s harbors!

We had a blast! We’ll try to upload some video soon. Meanwhile, here are some nice photos by our friend Johan:

Lau & Doug vs. Gamereactor – Round Three

At Nordic Game Indie Night, Lau and I also did another video interview with our friends at Gamereactor. Yup, we played the fool, yet again:

Arcade Boat 2011

Together with Illutron (formerly known as Half Machine), we’re throwing a Spring party!

What: Merriment and local hand-crafted indie games
Who: Us, the Copenhagen Game Collective!
Where: Illutron, Alliancevej, Teglholmens Østkaj 43, Copenhagen (map here)
When: Saturday, May 14, 4pm till late

Why? Because the only thing better than playing videogames is playing them on a BOAT!

Facebook event page here.

Over the last year, we’ve had the opportunity to showcase our games all around Europe and North America. Now, we’d like to throw an exhibition here at home, to party with our home crowd and to show Copenhagen what we’ve been working on.

We’re teaming up with Illutron, a “collaborative interactive art studio” based on a big ol’ barge in the Copenhagen South Harbor at Teglholmen. Formerly known as “Half Machine,” Illutron throws some of the best exhibitions and parties in Copenhagen. We’re very excited to join forces!

Don’t worry, the ship is anchored by shore, so you’re free to come and go whenever you like. Yes, it’s all the way down in Sydhavn, but it will certainly be worth the bike/train ride. Get directions here.

We’ll be showing B.U.T.T.O.N., Where Is My Heart, Johann Sebastian Joust!, Monkey See Monkey Mime, and more. As far as I’m aware, this will be the very first public demo of the soon-to-be-finished Where Is My Heart build. Awesome!

And who knows, we might even bust out some crazy folk games!

Make sure to bring cash if you want to buy beer. Or feel free to bring your own booze. Weather permitting, we may also set up some grills, so feel free to bring your own grillables/dinner too.

On Self-Effacing Games and Unachievements

What is unfair if unfair is totally OK?

Right before GDC, some of my theoretical research on B.U.T.T.O.N. got published in a special issue of Game Studies (an online journal for computer games research). The name of the article is “Brutally Unfair Tactics Totally OK Now: On Self-Effacing Games and Unachievements.”

You can read it here.

Here’s an excerpt:

It can be deeply empowering, and even uproariously fun, to improvise and bicker over rules. By taking a more skeptical, confrontational stance towards the technologies with which we design, we might open up a fertile ground of underexplored design possibilities – hybrid forms where digital games are not so readily distinguishable from their non-digital predecessors. Drawing from the wisdom of folk games and children’s play, games like B.U.T.T.O.N. remind us that modifying and making rules is sometimes the most enjoyable game of them all – especially when done together.

Brutally Unfair Knytt

Brutally Unfair Knytt

To celebrate the PC release of B.U.T.T.O.N., we got together with our friend Nifflas for another silly collaboration!

We’ve prepared a very special B.U.T.T.O.N.-themed mod of Nifflas’ famous indie platformer, Knytt. Check out the mod here.

The official title is “Brutally Unfair Knytt,” but you can also call it “K.N.Y.T.T.”  (Knytt Needs Your Tricky Tactics).

The mod features loads of new stuff: new item locations, a modified map, new backgrounds, B.U.T.T.O.N. characters, absurd B.U.T.T.O.N. content, a new ending, and lots of other secret goodies. Um, and there’s even an “Adult Mode” – yes, seriously. We promise that it actually has an effect on the game world. Those more perceptive of you may be able to figure it out :)

B.U.T.T.O.N. is out for PC!

B.U.T.T.O.N. is out for PC!

In case you missed during all the GDC madness: our silly party game B.U.T.T.O.N. is now out for PC! For a mere $3. Grab it now!

There are two places you can get the PC version:

1) The game is available on Steam, here. The Steam version features a bunch of zany/satirical achievements! Already, 1.1% of our players have unlocked the “Awkward Christmas” achievement. But wait, the game has only been out since late February… cheaters!

2) We’re also selling the game off our own website, here. Our website version, unlike the Steam version, features “Naughty Mode” (adult content!). What does that “naughtiness” entail, you ask? Naughty Mode introduces commands such as:

  • “Put on an article of clothing belonging to another player”
  • “All losers this round have to strip an article of clothing”
  • “All players who have ‘done it’ in public, kneel down”

Both versions feature a ton of new commands, and even some new music from Nifflas!

We’re also selling Nifflas’ excellent soundtrack, for only $2, here. Here’s a taste:

Kissing Another Player (B.U.T.T.O.N.) by Nifflas

Of course, we’re also still selling the game on Xbox Live Indie, here.

Some day we’d like to offer versions in other languages, and support user-written text more generally. We’ll do what we can!

If you like the game, please help spread the word.

Happy playing everybody!

And in case you’ve never seen the game before, this is what it plays like:
