Weekly Music Tip, April 11 2010: Kyle Hall
Early candidate for best record of 2010! Two soulful two-step grooves on the acclaimed Hyperdub label, from Detroit native Kyle Hall:
You can buy the record here.
The craziest thing is that Hall is only 18 years old!!
The kid has crazy talent. Check out this endearing video of him hanging out at his school makin’ dope beats:
I’ve read a number of enlightening interviews with him, but perhaps the most memorable quip (from this interview) is:
You’re still only 18, why do you think you’ve managed to get so far at such a young age?
The reason is I don’t do drugs, I don’t smoke weed or cigarettes, I don’t drink coffee, I don’t give my money away to bitches and I do what I want.
It never ceases to amaze me how much good music comes out of Detroit, still after all these years. Here at the collective we’re big fans of Derrick May in particular, and of course there are countless other Detroit talents like Juan Atkins, Rob Hood, Mike Huckaby, Kevin Saunderson, Carl Craig… the list goes on. Here’s a recent article from XLR8R on the current scene in Detroit, with some interesting interview snippets from Anthony “Shake” Shakir (who himself just released a wonderful 3-CD compilation).
